Far UV-C has been shown to have the same pathogen-reducing properties, while remaining safe within established limits for human exposure. It effectively destroys bacteria and viruses, but does not penetrate the outermost superficial (non-living) layers of the skin and eyes, avoiding the deleterious effects of traditional UVC at higher wavelengths.
